The chairman of Middlesex CCC has apologised for saying there is a lack of diversity in cricket because Afro-Caribbean people prefer football and rugby and the South Asian community focus on education.

Mike O'Farrell said he was 'devastated' his comments 'led to the conclusions some have made' after a huge backlash.

Mr O'Farrell had told an inquiry into racism in the game the sport becomes of secondary importance to these communities because it is more time consuming.

Former Yorkshire spinner Azeem Rafiq, whose testimony triggered the probe into the sport, said it 'confirmed what a endemic problem the game has'.

It came as England and Wales Cricket Board updated its 12-point action plan to tackle racism and discrimination.

The document included details on a review of 'dressing room culture' and a standardised approach to whistleblowing.
