The HICP was below the median forecast of a 7.2% year-on-year rise in a Reuters survey of 17 analysts. Official statistics agency ISTAT also reported that the main domestic price index (NIC), was up 1.2% on the month and up 6.7% annually in March, following a 5.7% annual rate in February.
The March annual rate was the highest since July, 1991, ISTAT said. Year-on-year inflation was driven mainly by energy prices, ISTAT said. Core inflation (net of fresh food and energy) was running at 2.1% year-on-year on the HICP index in March, up from 1.9% in February.
