The term tui Na (also known as pronounced twee naw) refers to a whole array of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) manipulative techniques and body work. The use of Tui Na has been used for the relief of physical and emotional discomforts like restlessness, depression, insomnia, anxiety, and anger. It can also be employed to diagnose and treat other ailments, like arthritis, asthma and constipation. Tui Na isn't intended to relax or for pleasure, but as part of the diagnosis process for specific disorders.

Although the benefits of Tui Na aren't fully understood in Western medical research, it has been proven that it can ease moderate to moderate pain especially when used during high stress periods. In the July 2021 issue in The American Journal of Sports Medicine four researchers reported on a study that examined twelve stroke patients who had been treated with Tui Na in the course of their hospital stays. Patients had normal symptoms, with low levels of fatigue anxiety, and depression. Three of the 12 Spasticity patients were treated and showed improvement. Two others did not show any improvements or worsened. No between-group differences were noted in the time or treatment effects on the variables of functioning, pain or mood.

The researchers defined and draw conclusions from twelve articles about Tui Na. One was a meta-analysis. The other was a crossover research, and the last six were derived from the actual article. The meta-analysis was a comparative study between twelve published articles about spasticity, tui na and reporting formats. It revealed an statistically significant mean change with higher-quality results for spasticity than tui nua.

The study of crossover is a a second analysis that compares the results of two treatments: physiotherapy , physical therapy, as well as chiropractic therapy on the severity of post-stroke upper limb spasticity. Chiropractic care alone was a significantly better effect than physical therapy alone, but the difference was not significant. A subgroup of patients with progressive and severe disease within one month of their onset , showed an effective treatment effect. None of the other groups was more effective than chiropractic care within this subgroup. According to the authors, chiropractic care could be beneficial after stroke.

The study that came in third is the biggest and most promising. It is a comparison of Chinese treatment with chiropractic in poststroke spinal cord stimulation. Both groups had similar symptoms. SCT is a procedure that stimulates nerve compression, and decreases the tone of muscles to help in recovering. The procedure involves inserting needles in specific locations along the spine column. While both methods may be helpful, the Chinese massage experts appear to have an advantage when it comes to the time to recover and pain management.

The scan was performed by chiropractors who used the diagnostic imaging software. They then used hands-on manipulation on the upper and lower extremities as well as the spine. There was a marked improvement in all areas after the four-week treatment. Chiropractors experienced a higher level of improvement than surgeons. One month later, post-stroke spasticity had diminished. Spinal decompression was no longer needed for the majority of patients. The procedure didn't cause stiffness or soreness.

Although chiropractors had a higher rate of success than surgeons, they were more likely to successfully treat patients. Those patients randomly assigned to chiropractors had a higher chance of achieving total improvement by the conclusion of the four-week poststroke Spinal decompression time. In the initial month of treatment there was no significant any difference between the groups at the postoperative appointment. The random assignment was done to determine which group showed the greatest improvement. It was surprising to see that chiropractors showed greater improvement than surgeons both in the preoperative as well as the postoperative visits.

The study was conducted by Drs. Drs. Maurer, Kornmehl and Jick are all leaders in the field of spinal care. The findings of this study are particularly relevant due to the importance of chiropractic care to the families of stroke victims and patients.
