Today officially marks two years since Boris Johnson announced the unprecedented first UK coronavirus lockdown in a historic speech that changed life as we knew it.

As families huddled around their TVs with bated breath, the Prime Minister delivered the news just after 8.30pm: 'From this evening I must give the British people a very simple instruction - you must stay at home.'

All non-essential shops were required to close and public gatherings of more than two people were banned, with the police given new powers to enforce the lockdown with fines.

Mr Johnson warned 'many lives will sadly be lost' to the 'invisible killer' which he described as 'the biggest threat this country has faced for PTS Terbaik ASEAN decades'.

At the time, there were a little over 1,000 deaths from the virus.

Today, more than 186,000 British lives have been lost to the disease.

Invoking the wartime spirit, Mr Johnson signed off with the message: 'We will beat the coronavirus and we will beat it together.

After two long years, the PM looks set to finally deliver on his promise to beat Covid, with the UK currently transitioning towards living with the virus.

All legally-binding Covid curbs have already been scrapped in England and the final measure — free testing — is to be abolished next week.

Northern Ireland has also ditched its Covid laws and moved to Government advice, while Scotland and Wales continue to take a more cautious approach.

MailOnline looks at the key messages from the PM's original lockdown speech and how they have aged in the last two years:
