The United States is seen as the next big growth market for sports betting, spawning a series of transatlantic partnerships tapping into European expertise such as Britain's William Hill being bought by Caesars Entertainment in a 2.9 billion pound ($3.9 billion) deal announced last September.
It put the shortfall down to the UK Government's decision to slash the maximum stake on FOBT's from £100 to £2 earlier this year, as well as a doubling of tax on sports betting in Ireland.
There were just eight firms that held unicorn status in 2010, including Ocado and gambling giant Betfair, but this number had grown to 81 last year, according to data firm Dealroom.co and the Government's Digital Economy Council.
YouGov research published last month found that one in five problem gamblers in the UK spent more to ‘relieve boredom' in the first lockdown. And the number of addicts telling the Gordon Moody charity helpline they felt suicidal quadrupled.
At 288 million pounds ($402 million), the U.S.
accounted for 20% of quarterly revenues and Flutter now has twice as many average monthly customers there - 1.6 million - as Australia, where its Sportsbet brand is the current market leader.
Flutter, which also owns the PokerStars and Sky Bet brands, currently gives customers the ability to place deposit and loss limits on their accounts and ask to be excluded from certain products or entire gambling websites for up to six months.
These factors helped its US revenues between January and March climb 45 per cent year-on-year to £429million, enabling it to maintain its position as the largest sportsbook in the country.
