The winner overall
The Brita pitcher might seem to be the clear winner in terms of speed, and total cost of ownership. But it did remove far less material from my tap water. That fact outweighs all others and makes the ZeroWater top dog in my book.

With the highly contagious and deadly lambda, delta and delta plus variants of COVID-19 continuing to spread across the US, you may be concerned about your child's safety when they return to school and social activities. Masking rules are designed to protect those below the age of 12 who aren't able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine yet. And, while breakthrough infections rarely result in hospitalization, wearing masks if you're vaccinated adds an extra layer of protection -- and will prevent you from possibly spreading COVID to more vulnerable members of your family or the community.
One downfall for backpackers looking for a convenient travel water bottle, though, is that this filter bottle will never return to its dry weight while you're on foot. It's impossible to squeeze all of the water out of the bottle, so expect it to add some weight to your pack after the first use.

Moments later, I ran tap water from the same faucet through each filter pitcher, then tested their ppm. Water from the Brita showed a TDS of 147 ppm. That's a modest reduction of 21.4 percent. By contrast, I was floored by the filtered water I tested from the ZeroWater 8 Cup. I logged a TDS of 0, essentially 100 percent reduction of TDS. Keep in mind I used my own Orapxi water quality tester, not the supplied ZeroWater TDS meter.
How we test
To test these water filter pitchers, I washed each one with mild soap and water -- and followed the individual manufacturer instructions for soaking, rinsing or otherwise prepping filters for use. Then I filled a marked mason jar glass with 16 ounces of tap water and used an Orapxi water quality tester to measure and note the pH and the TDS present.
