Trent Et Quarante was written by the famous Dominican priest and philosopher Father Philippe Lacroix. Lacroix was born in Paris and joined the friars from Avignon at the beginning of the 16th century. Although not entirely an Roman Catholic, Father Lacroix was active in the Roman catholic church during the Counter-Reformation. As a priest, he began to write and publish works on the most important issues pertaining to religion and the laity. Trent is not just famous for his faith works and his piety, but also for his naturalism and natural philosophy works.

Trent Et Quarante offers excellent background information about merit and its relation to the divine and the natural. According to Trent Et Quarante merit refers to the conformity of an action to an eternal or supernatural standard such as God. In order to be merit on which to base it, there has to be a certain degree of conformity with a standard beyond the self. This is a requirement for conformity to God's will. So according to Trent Et Quarante the notion of merit is nothing other than the notion that God wants things to be accomplished. This means that If God wants us to be virtuous then we are (though in virtue of God's will) to be virtuous.

To demonstrate the idea of merit, Trent divides the book in three sections. The first part, the Pre-venient Ground explores the history of salvation. The Pre-venient Ground teaches that salvation came to man via the voluntary action of his creation. The act of redemptive means that it's not against the will of man, because man could have stopped his creation by changing or disregarding the directives that God gave him. Man could have avoided the fall by pursuing his salvation.

The second portion of this awe-inspiring work, called the Philosophy of Virtue, traces man's deterioration. The Philosophy of Virtue maintains that man is not really liberated, as he is influenced by many elements that produce what he actually does, and thus corroding his character. Man is in the wrong for murder, rape theft, murder, and all other abysmal crimes, but only one. He is guilty of freedom loss due to sin because he is under the influence of his own choices. According to philosophers of virtue, people are honored according their individual choices.

The third and last part The Consequences of the initial sin, outlines the consequences of not executing the will of God in the right and moral ways. God is great, and he has a set of unchanging principles, therefore there is no need for him to be concerned about the actions of men. The consequences for people are summed up in two losses of freedom and misery. The philosophers of virtue consider freedom loss as inevitable since God has placed humans in the omnipotence of God. They are therefore obliged to obey his commands.

The Philosophy of Virtue was translated into Latin by Father Bedo, in the year 1570. It was a collection of glossaries and was printed in forty-eight copies, with one supplement and an original edition. It was the main source for later works on virtue metaphysics. Some variations were made to accommodate the preferences of Italians and the period. It's a well-known name even when the philosophical theories of virtue are complex and long due to the numerous arguments that are presented in the book. It can therefore hardly be called the first metaphysical dictionary.

Father Pole translated the thirty-second section of the present work of the metaphysical Dictionary. It contains a concise description of this philosophy of merits and demerit. Both books are a commentary on works by Father Pole and Father Bedo. These are the most comprehensive guide to the topic of philosophy. But the peculiarities of English make them hard to understand. The entire treatise, however, is rich in aphorisms and beautiful illustrations.

For the convenience of the readers and since it's written in simple and easy Italian It can be purchased directly from the publisher without the need of any translation agency. The glossary includes definitions that aid students to comprehend the meanings of the aphorisms and the arguments in the book. The manual also contains a brief note about copyright. The book is available by the publisher, or from any bookstore specializing in ancient philosophies manuals and an Latin original edition of the work titled De Dividers Generis.
