A daughter of a friend, Susan, was house and cat sitting. It's something she loves and that earns her an additional income. Susan was concerned about the cat, however, since he was dirty, smelt and looked thin and ragged.

Now, healthy cats NEVER smell, are dirty or appear dirty. Also, they aren't fat or even thin, although neither is an obese cat healthy.

So I asked her what her diet was, knowing very of my knowledge what the answer would be.

And it was.

Okay, it was not the responsibility of Susan what the cat was fed, but she does take her responsibilities seriously and was worried that the cat wouldn't stay long enough until her family returned from their holiday.

And the cat is very loved and loves to sleep with her. She'd prefer not to share her mattress with a smelly, dirty cat and feels bad about it.

What can she do?

So I suggested she feed the cat cat food that is raw.

The fourth day later she informed me that the cat seemed to be more relaxed.

On the sixth day, Susan reported that the cat was washing itself.

On the ninth day she reported that the cat was eagerly waiting for his food, and was eating it up with enthusiasm, devouring every scrap.

At the end of day 12 she said that the cat was almost like an ordinary cat. It was clean and sweet, smelled nice, was filling out, was content and gave her no concern at all about his chances of staying alive.

She was already sharing her bed with him by now as well.

It's wonderful to hear that the cat's people were awed by the new cat they had returned to. One can only hope that they stayed with the raw cat food diet Susan was able to implement.

This cat was in his middle age, which means that the purging time at the start of his new diet was a bit smaller than what a cat of a higher age would experience.

It's worth every moment of the disgust your cat treats you with in the early days, as they adjust to the raw cat food. They could stare at you with a sour face, refuse the food or paw it as if to bury it or turn their backs at you, the works.
