British army chiefs are developing 'bionic' soldiers with Terminator-like powers.

According to Government files, state-of-the-art gadgets - either implanted or worn externally - will produce troops who can 'see through walls', communicate 'telepathically' or detect airborne chemicals with no smell or taste.

By 2030, soldiers will also wear 'exoskeletons', a protective covering, to protect from bullets and enhance strength and speed.

The ground-breaking projects, in collaboration with Germany's defence ministry, come as the UK attempts to stay ahead of similar developments by China.

A document laying out the MoD's strategy over the coming years said it is looking at robotics, human augmentation, chemical enhancement and AI to create a new breed of soldiers.

One invasive procedure is to coat a soldier's retina with nanoparticles, enabling them to see the infrared spectrum and giving them X-ray type vision - similar to that of The Terminator in the Arnold Schwarzenegger films.

Last night, Hamish De Bretton-Gordon, a former colonel in the British Army, said: 'We want to embrace technology as much as we can, but I am not sure we understand the unintended consequences of synthetic biology.'
