Home renovations can cost a fortune.

But for savvy thrifty mother-of-two Tracey O'Malley, from Sydney, she managed to save $40,000 after getting the materials from classifieds website Gumtree.

From purchasing a fireplace for a fraction of the price to a free spa, the thrifty woman revealed how she revamped her family home on a shoestring budget.

'Most of the things are brand new but for half the price,' she told Sunrise.

She purchased a brand new door for just $50, a lock for $65 and tiles for both her kitchen and bathroom for a measly $150.

'The fireplace was an absolute bargain, I found it for $200 on Gumtree and it's valued at $3,700,' Ms O'Malley said.

The stunning outdoor spa was free on the condition they pick it up from Newcastle, about 165km from Sydney.

After finding her interior materials at an affordable cost, she gave her home's entrance, laundry, lounge room and kitchen a full makeover.

The avid bargain hunter said she has been a long-time Gumtree user - and decided to get all her things in one spot.

She even purchased the bar stools before the family even moved into the house.

'I had the kitchen, I just needed the house,' she said as she laughed.
