Michigan State coach Tom Izzo recorded his 700th career victory as the Spartans pulled away from in-state rival Michigan, defeating the visiting Wolverines 81-62 at East Lansing on Tuesday night.

Jaden Akins scored a career-high 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, and A.J. Hoggard had 15 points and seven assists as the Spartans outscored the Wolverines 48-27 in the second half. Tyson Walker and Malik Hall scored 12 points apiece for the Spartans (13-8, 5-5 Big Ten), who have won four of their last five games.

Jaelin Llewellyn led the Wolverines (7-14, 2-8) with 18 points. Michigan has lost nine of its last 10 games. Terrance Williams II contributed 14 points.

Michigan State converted 13 Michigan turnovers into 20 points.

Michigan led by as much as nine points in the first half before settling for a 35-33 halftime advantage. Llewellyn led the way with 12 points, while Akins kept the Spartans close with 11.

The Wolverines built that nine-point lead, 18-9, with a 10-1 run. Llewellyn and Reed scored five points apiece during that span.

Michigan led the remainder of the half but couldn't pull away. Xavier Booker knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the Wolverines' lead to 22-19.

Llewellyn's 3-pointer with 1:42 left in the half made it 35-28. Hall answered with a layup and Hoggard converted a three-point play to complete the first-half scoring.

Michigan's Nimari Burnett opened the second half with a 3-pointer. The Spartans roared back with a 16-1 run to take a 49-39 lead.

Hall got it started with a bucket. He tied the score at 39-apiece with a layup. Walker made a steal and a layup to give the Spartans the lead. A Hall steal led to an Akins layup.

Hall added another field goal and Akins drained a 3-pointer in transition to finish off the outburst.

With the score 54-46, detik the Spartans reeled off seven unanswered points to extend their lead to 15. Hoggard and Tre Holloman had layups and Walker supplied a three-point play.

Michigan State led by double digits the rest of the way.

The schools will hold a rematch in Ann Arbor on Feb. 17.
